HD KSOE wins $175m tanker order from Sonangol Shipping

HD Hyundai Samho will build two 157,000 dwt tankers with delivery scheduled for May 2027

The Angolan state energy company has placed its second order with the South Korean shipbuilder, following an initial order for two suezmax tankers in 2021

SOUTH Korea’s HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has announced in a stock exchange filing that it has won two suezmax tankers worth Won257.6bn ($175m) from Sonangol Shipping.

The 157,000 dwt tankers will be built by HD Hyundai Samho and are scheduled for delivery by May 2027.

This is the second contract awarded by Sonangol to HD KSOE since 2021.

In 2021, Sonangol ordered two 158,000 dwt tankers from HD Hyundai Samho. Sonangol Kulumbimbi (IMO: 9938482) and Sonangol Kulumbimbi (IMO: 9938482) were delivered in 2023.

The Stena Sonangol Suezmax Pool, a joint venture between Sonangol and the Swedish tanker operator Stena Bulk, operates 17 crude oil tankers.

In a media statement, HD KSOE said: “Including these orders, we have received orders for a total of 24 ships worth $4.1bn to date, achieving 22.6% of the annual order target of $18.1bn.”

By ship type, the company has received orders for four tankers, one liquified natural gas carrier, four LNG bunkering vessels, one liquified petroleum gas/ammonia carrier, two ethane carriers and 12 containerships.

An HD KSOE official told Lloyd’s List: “Based on a stable order backlog, we plan to continue our selective order-taking strategy with a focus on profitability.”
